The Price of Freedom

Friday, January 25th, 2008

I wrote this newsletter shortly after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in Ney York in 2001. The theme and the content were inspired by the many brave and selfless acts that were recorded. Not only did police and fire fighters respond with speed and efficiency, but many civilian heroes emerged that day. I think that many in America, like myself, spent at least a little time thinking about how we would respond in a similar emergency. This led me to think about the price of our freedom. The price of freedom may turn out to be equivalent to the sum total of every death and dollar that was required to establish it . Most likely though, we will never be able to calculate the true price of freedom.

Hopefully, in remembering the loss of life and displays of courage and bravery of September 11, 2001, we can all echo the signal voice of Patrick Henry.

“I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death.”

I hope that you enjoy this newsletter and that it invigorates you to contemplate your freedom and the price that was paid to secure it.

Reflections on the character of George Washington

Friday, January 25th, 2008

In this newsletter I discuss some of the strengths of the “Father” of our nation, including observations of those close to him. Many were impressed with his strength and cunning in battle. But equal to his military inclinations was an endless devotion to morality, civility, virtue and the relationship between Heaven and worldly prosperity. From his first inaugural address we get a glimpse of his character and devotion to religious principle.

“…since we ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained…”

Those that worked closely with him were equally praising of his honesty and virtue, as we can see here in the words of Thomas Jefferson.

“His integrity, was the most pure, his justice the most inflexible I have ever known. He was, indeed, in every sense of the word,a wise, a good, and a great man.” —Thomas Jefferson

This newsletter contains a complete reproduction of George Washington’s first inaugural address and a summary of world events that place his life in global context. I’m sure you’ll find that this newsletter helps raise your appreciation of this great man in American history.

I’ll be moving my content over to a blog.  Hopefully this will enable me to write more frequently in the coming months and during the 2008 presidential elections.  This will also enable you to participate with me by adding your comments to articles that I post.
